Product review: Goody QuickStyle Hairbrush

So I normally don’t do reviews on my business blog but I might just start doing so. We’ve had a lot of changes around the Keefe household and I will update you all on that stuff soon.

I joined Influenster a few months ago. It’s a really cool site where you leave reviews on all sorts of products. Things we use every day. I happily jumped on board and started reviewing products that I had been using for years or had tried and so on. It’s kind of funny because I got a little addicted to leaving reviews on a daily basis.

In December I got an email that I would be receiving a Holiday Vox Box of goodies to try out and review. Yippy!!! Boy was I excited. And the goodies were reallt good ones too.

First thing I did was unpackage my Goody QuickStyle hairbrush. I was so excited to try it. It has these microfiber bristles that help dry your hair much faster. And also makes for a smooth brushing experience.

I hopped in the shower right away and did my usual shower routine. Went straight to the hairdryer right after I got dressed and proceeded to brush my hair. Definitely easier to brush my long hair. Drying it with the brush was a success too. Tried much quicker and smoother than normal. My only gripe is that I got the paddle brush instead of the round one. I find the paddle brush a little large for my liking so I think the half round one would have suited me better. I highly recommend the QuickStyle to anyone! Well it may not work too good for men but for women and little girls, it’s amazing. Here’s the description as listed on Influenster:

“The GOODY® QUIKSTYLE™ Paddle brush works like a towel and brush in one. The super absorbent (and antimicrobial) microfiber removes 30% of water from wet hair to help speed your drying time! You can effortlessly detangle right out of the shower and continue using it while you blow dry!”

You can read plenty of reviews on them on Influenster by following this link: http://www.influenster.com/review/goody-quikstyle-paddle-brush

Goody has plenty of other amazing products to check out. http://www.goody.com/

Nominate a deserving family | The Olivia Act

  • The Olivia Act- Nomination form

The Olivia Act, named after one of the children killed in Newtown, was started by a photographer who wishes to be anonymous. Olivia’s family had family pictures taken a short time before she was killed. Those pictures are precious and now priceless to them. Upon hearing this, this photographer was moved to give away a 30 minute family photo shoot and has challenged other photographers to do the same. We go about our daily lives and sometimes we don’t take the time or have the resources to have family photos taken.
I will be taking nominations for a family who you think would appreciate this gift of memories. The session will take place sometime after the new year and will be completely FREE to the family chosen. They will also receive a cd with all of the images from their session absolutely free. Please fill out this form to submit your nomination. The family chosen will be contacted via email, so please include their email address as well! I’ll be taking nominations anytime between now (December 19th) and January 1st. Please keep in mind that the session will be taking place in the Charlotte, NC area.

End of year sale! | Charlotte NC Family Photography

What a fabulous year it has been! Thank you to all my clients past, present, and future. You all have been wonderful and I look forward to a great 2013!

Some of you know that we are expecting our third girl in mid January. January 15, 2013 to be exact. We are so very excited that our family is growing. I have decided to not take anymore sessions until mid February. I will take the time to prepare for our new bundle and clear out my computers in preparation for next year. I need to make space. You all have no idea how many images I have on my computers and hard drives. In order to do what I want, I need to start deleting old sessions. You all know that means it’s sale time!!!

If you have had a session in 2011 you can purchase yor disc of images for $50. That’s right, I said $50. Buy it now before it’s they are gone. I will be deleting the images from my hard drives to make room for new ones. Once I delete them, they will be gone forever! I will go through them and keep a select few for my portfolio but majority will be deleted. If you had multiple sessions in that year, you can purchase one for $50, the next for $40, and then $30. You get the picture.

If you had a session in 2012, I have  a deal for you too! You can purchase your disc of images for only $75! Multiple sessions in the year? Next disc is $65. These will be moved to a hard drive and will incur a fee to pull them out of archive at a later date. Not to mention the price will be higher. Get it while you can! This special won’t last long and I will begin the process of deleting and moving next week.

Wait, I have one more deal for you! Book your 2013 session for February 15th or later and your session fee is only $75. Normally $150. That’s half off! I will only book a limited amount at this special rate so don’t let it slip by. To take advantage of any of these specials, just send an email to Shelly@shellykeefe.com and label the subject with which special you would like to take advantage of. Some of you can benefit from all three deals!

Tips from the Photographer : Lenses | Charlotte NC Photographer

Let’s talk about lenses. One look at all the available lenses out there and you may ask yourself “What’s the difference?”. I’ll explain a little about the different lenses and hopefully you will understand them just a little bit more. Lenses come in different focal lengths, some zoom and some prime, and all different apertures.

There are several different types of lenses. The most common are:

Prime lenses
These are typically the 35mm 50mm, 85mm. These are great for portraits. Prime lens means they have a fixed focal length. They also typically have a lower aperature feature than zoom lenses going as large as 1.8, 1.4 or even 1.2

Zoom lenses
Zoom lenses are lenses in which you can change the focal length by zooming in and out. For instance the 24-70mm 2.8 lens. It allows you to zoom in or out from one spot. They typically have a aperature feature going as large a 2.8

Telephoto lenses
These have focal lengths much longer then other lenses. (200mm or 500mm some even more) They are great for nature or sports photography when you can’t or don’t want to get close to your subject

Macro lenses
These lenses allow you to get extremely close to your subject. Great for taking pictures of flowers or insects. They capture all the tiny details much better than the other lenses.

Wide angle lenses
These are great lenses for landscape photography or if you want to get creative with your images. The focal length is much shorter which allows you to get more of your scence in your image.

The focal length of a lens is measured in millimeters. You will see lenses say 50mm 1.4 or 24-70mm 2.8, and a wide variety of other numbers. I’ll refer to these two lenses because they are two that I own and love! (Just so we are clear, I work with all Canon equipment. Some brands may list these things a little differently. I’m not familiar with other brands so I can’t answer that for sure.) If you look at the 50mm 1.4 you will have a fixed focal length of 50 millimeters. This is a prime lens. This means to get a close up, you will have to move closer to your subject. There are limitations on how close you can move before you cannot focus on your subject. One try at getting too close and you will see what I mean. Alternately if you want to get more of the scene in your image, you will have to take some steps back. Zoom lenses allow you to change your focal length without having to move your feet. I have my days when I love my zoom lens and other days where I feel like prime is the right thing for me.

A couple example images. This one was taken at a focal length of 34mm with my 24-70mm zoom lens.

This one was taken at a focal length of 54mm using the same exact lens and both my self and my subjects standing in the same exact spots as the previous image. Aren’t my subjects just the cutest things ever? I’m so proud of my little princesses.

You can see the different amount of the scene captures in each image based off the focal length that I used. Neither image was cropped afterwards. The numbers following the focal point on the lens is for your maximum aperture. Understanding aperture will help you choose the right lens for your needs. We’ll discuss aperture very soon.

Hope you enjoyed todays post. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at shelly@shellykeefe.com. I will touch on something different with each post. I will try to keep my posts a couple days apart but it may take a little longer here and there. Just depends on what else I have on my list of things to do. Have a great day!

**Notice: Images used in this post were not fully edited. They are just to show examples of focal length. I realize the skin tones are not great.:)
